A prominent politician Sir Robert Chiltern (Hugh Williams) is preparing to expose a financial scandal.
He and his wife Gertrude are are hosting a party for the upper crust of England, when the mysterious and devious Laura Cheveley (Paulette Goddard) enters their lives.
Laura, who has invested heavily in the shady venture threatens to uncover a damaging secret in Sir Robert's past if he exposes the speculation as a fraud.
