In this video I discuss the key link between depression, anxiety, insomnia and poor gut health. There are a number of digestive issues that will end up leading to poor nutrient absorption, which will consequently cause the individual to have ongoing negative thoughts.
Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that must be acquired through diet. Tryptophan is converted into 5-HTP which is then converted into serotonin (our feel good neurotransmitter). However in order for this to happen, protein must first be successfully broken down in the stomach, by a combination of hydrochloric acid and pepsin. The conversion from Tryptophan to 5-HTP then requires iron, and finally the conversion from 5-HTP to serotonin requires a number of B-vitamins (B3, B5, B9 and B12) and magnesium.
If you are deficient in any of the above nutrients, or you're unable to successfully break them down to absorb them, it is likely that you're having issues forming the neurotransmitter serotonin. It may also be that you have a bacterial infection in your stomach causing low stomach acid output - the most common one being Helicobacter Pylori (H. Pylori) and if you wanted to get tested for this, the stool test is called the Helicobacter Pylori Stool Antigen.
