French automaker Bugatti has unveiled what might be the world's most expensive sports car at the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland.
The Bugatti La Voiture Noire has already been sold for over 16-million euros (approx. $18 million USD), but it's far from the only hyper luxury car at the show.
STORYLINE:
Who buys a car for 16.7 million euros (approx. $18.9 million USD)? The answer is - not you.
This Bugatti creation, called the La Voiture Noire (The Black Car) has already been sold to one lucky, and presumably very rich, buyer.
The car is based in the classic Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic that was designed by Jean Bugatti, the son of the Bugatti founder.
"What makes it special is it's one of one. This is for sure," says Stephan Winkelmann, the CEO of Bugatti.
"Then it's a gran turismo, so it has a longer nose. And the wheelbase is longer than in, for example, the Chiron. And it's more for the cruising. It's less for top speed and speeding."
The release is a celebration of the 110th anniversary since the founding of the Bugatti company.
The car has a 16-cylinder engine, but the appeal of the car is likely mostly to do with it being fully exclusive to only one buyer.
"Here we are, Europe's biggest motor show and everyone is talking about Bugatti because of this car," says Jim Holder, the editorial director of British motoring magazine 'Autocar'.
"So, they win on both fronts. The customer gets what looks like an expensive car, but really is probably a great deal because it is so exclusive now. And Bugatti win because they are making headlines around the world."
The price of the car was set at 11-million euros (approx. $12.4 million USD), but with the added tax, the price was over 16-million euros (approx. $18 million USD).
"There definitely is a market for these cars," says Tim Steven, the editor-in-chief of Roadshow by CNET.
"In fact, Bugatti has a 12 million-dollar car here, which is absolutely outrageous. The money that people spend on these cars is incredible.
"They come here, you see them one time only, and then they get locked in a garage somewhere and you'll never see them again, but they are definitely being purchased."
British luxury car maker Aston Martin is releasing a "hyper car for daily use" at the motor show
Aston Martin's AM-RB 003 - dubbed the "daily supercar" - is a mid-engined concept car.
Previously known as Project 003, only 500 coupes will be produced in 2021 - giving more drivers the chance to pick up the groceries in style.
On-or-off the track, this supercar will be powered by Aston Martin's UK-built VC-six engine.
AM-RB 003 is the latest addition to the Valkyrie range, which is the result of a partnership between Aston Martin and the Red Bull F1 team.
The AM-RB 003 is still at the concept stage, Aston Martin has not released an expected price.
"Hyper car for everyday use, I think we described it," says Marek Reichman, Aston Martin vice president.
"And, as you can see, ease of entry and egress and exit from the car as well. A more usable cabin compared to the Valkyrie."
British luxury carmaker McLaren is showing the McLaren 600 LT.
LT stands for Long Tail, the car has a top speed of 328 kph and will accelerate from zero to 100 kph in 2.9 seconds.
Lamborghini, a part of the VW group, is launching the Huracán EVO Spyder at the motor show.
It has a top speed of 325 kph (202 mph).
Lamborghini says the price in Europe, depending on the country and taxes, will be about 220,000 euros (approx. $250,000 USD).
