After weeks of negotiations, a joint discussion body comprised of government officials, ruling party lawmakers and representatives from the taxi and carpool sectors reached an agreement.
They will allow carpool services in Korea, but under select conditions.
Kim Mok-yeon provides the details.
"We held our last meeting today, and I can say that all of us were very desperate. Though we cannot satisfy everyone, we tried to make concessions and finally we were able to come up with an agreement today."
After a final meeting on Thursday, the joint discussion body formed by government officials, ruling party lawmakers and representatives from the taxi and carpool sectors announced they will allow carpool services in Korea only during commute hours which is from 7 to 9 am. and from 6 to 8 p.m. local time, excluding weekends.
Participants also agreed to seek cutting red tape in the taxi industry and improve working conditions for taxi drivers, including the adoption of a monthly pay system for corporate owned cab drivers.
They also decided to launch taxis that adopted the latest innovative platform technology by the first half of 2019.
The agreement comes 45 days since the body was first launched in January after taxi industry workers protested over the launch of a car pool service from Kakao Mobility, a subsidiary of the Kakao Corporation last December.
Taxi drivers have been strongly opposing to the launch of carsharing services claiming that it would threaten their means of living.
