Captain Marvel was a smash hit with fans, delivering plenty of action and fun 90s nostalgia at the same time. But the film also introduced moviegoers to the Skrulls, a popular villain from the comic books. The Skrulls are known for their shapeshifting abilities, which make them ideal for infiltration and sabotage. In the comics, during the Secret Invasion arc, it was revealed that some heroes had actually been replaced upwards of ten years before Secret Invasion was published, meaning that these guys can wait a long time before unleashing their master plan. So what if the same thing has happened in the MCU? Captain Marvel takes place in the 90s, well before the events of Avengers Endgame or even the first Iron Man film so that’s plenty of time for the Skrulls to infiltrate their way into governments or even the Avengers themselves. The most likely candidate to be a Skrull is, of course, Nick Fury. He played a critical role in Captain Marvel and has been paramount to the formation of the Avengers. But was that the plan all along? A line in Captain Marvel about Fury’s secret food preference actually clashes with a scene in Age of Ultron, suggesting that the filmmakers are teasing the Fury we know isn’t Fury at all. And if Fury’s been replaced, who else may be? We know none of the superpowered individuals are but characters like Sharon Carter, Maria Hill, General Ross and maybe even War Machine may actually be Skrulls in hiding. Let’s break down the evidence and see if there’s any chance this theory is true!
