Surgical Treatment for Cloaca – Laparoscopic Approach

This animation demonstrates the repair of a long common channel cloaca.

Here, the rectum is divided from the urogenital sinus, and as pictured, the structures are unable to reach down to the perineum. In this case, a laparotomy is required, in order to divide the attachments and separate the vagina from the urinary tract. This is technically more difficult than the total urogenital mobilization, as the structures need to be delicately separated from one another. When this is performed, however, most of the time the structures can reach to the perineum, and again, the rectum is centered in the sphincters and attached at the perineal tissue.
