In this video, I break down a practice question about how to treat a patient with fluid overload.

The doctor asks you to evaluate the intensity of a patient’s pain. The most objective way to do so would be to:
A. ask the patient “How much pain are you having”
B. observe the patient for facial expressions indicative of pain
C. measure the patient’s pulse and respiratory rate
D. have the patient rate her pain on a numeric rating scale

If an alert patient indicates they have pain, the health care professional should quantify its intensity.

To do so, one should use an objective measure of pain severity. For alert adults, a numeric rating scale (NRS) is a good objective measure of pain severity.
