When Wang Yu was diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer in late 2017, he knew he had limited time left with his family. He decided to prepare a special farewell gift for them, travelling from their home in China’s western autonomous region of Xinjiang to the capital Beijing to record his voice for use in a smart home assistant device. Between sessions doing chemotherapy, he managed to capture enough phrases to allow the smart speaker to do advanced data analysis and simulate Wang's voice using automatic speech-recognition technology. The result is a device that ensures at least his words of love could live on with his family. The father was able to present his gift to his son and wife before he succumbed to his illness in December 2018.
