J.S. BACH: Vars. 21-22 from "Goldberg Variations" (BWV 988) | Cory Hall, pianist

J.S. BACH: Vars. 21-22 from INTRODUCTION TO BACH'S "GOLDBERG VARIATIONS": Are you a pianist or teacher wishing to play or teach Bach’s “Goldberg Variations”? Did you know that Bach composed his “Goldberg Variations” not necessarily for elite concert artists and prodigies, but they were meant to be as accessible as Bach’s other pedagogical cycles, such the “Two-Part Inventions” or “The Well-Tempered Clavier”?

Dr. Cory Hall is one of the world’s leading experts on the large-scale structure, tempo relationships, and pedagogical intent of Bach’s “Goldberg Variations. One of Hall’s doctoral lecture recitals as a “Graduate Honors Fellow” at the University of Kansas (from 1991-1994) was “Temporal Organization in Bach’s Goldberg Variations,” and in 2005 he published an article in “American Music Teacher” (journal of the MTNA) entitled “Bach’s Goldberg Variations Demystified.” In this article, Dr. Hall discusses Bach’s large-scale temporal symmetry, tempo relationships implied by Bach’s use of fermatas, as well as the pedagogical value and level of difficulty of the variations. Dr. Hall’s concludes that Bach did not necessarily intend the “Goldberg Variations” to be played in entirety in concert performances (as we are used to hearing the work today), but rather, Bach intended the fourth installment in his “Clavierübung” series (literally, “Keyboard Practice”) to be practiced and understood by all keyboardists as a collection of exercises for the recreation and enrichment of their minds.
