Converting the color of the acidic or alkaline medium, the substances giving information are called pointer. In addition to litmus, methyl orange and phenolphthylene are also used as acid-base indicator.
Methyl orange gives orange color with acids, while yellowing with bases gives color.
Finolphhetene remains colorless in acidic solution while its color turns pink in alkaline solution.
We have identified acids and bases by the indicators, but they also have some other properties that can be identified by them.

रंग परिवर्तित कर अम्लीय या क्षारीय माध्यम की सूचना देने वाले पदार्थों को सूचक कहते हैं।
लिटमस के अतिरिक्त मिथाइल ऑरेंज एवं फिनॉलफ्थेलीन का भी उपयोग अम्ल-क्षार सूचक के रूप में किया जाता है।
मिथाइल ऑरेंज, अम्लों के साथ नारंगी रंग जबकि क्षारकों के साथ पीला रंग देता है।
फिनॉलफ्थेलीन, अम्लीय विलयन में रंगहीन रहता है जबकि क्षारीय विलयन में इसका रंग गुलाबी हो जाता है।
अम्ल एवं क्षार की पहचान सूचकों के द्वारा तो हमने कर ली पर इनके कुछ और गुण भी हैं जिनसे इन्हें पहचाना जा सकता है।
