Is it cost effective to recycle materials in projects?

A common question I have is it cost effective to recycle materials to be reused in the project. At times it is more cost effective to demo and replace the materials as the cost of labour to carefully remove, clean the material to be reused is sometimes more expensive than buying the material new.
