Authorities responded to reports of a traffic collision and resulting confined space rescue at the intersection of East Ball Road and South State College Boulevard around 10:26 PM.
Units arriving on scene located a white sedan that had crashed into a construction site in the middle of the intersection forcing a worker down into a 20-foot hole being shored in preparation for sewer work.
Due to the worker's injuries he was unable to self-extricate from the hole and firefighters quickly formulated a plan that involved using a fire truck ladder to hoist the man from the hole.
In just under an hour firefighters were able to lower a stoked basket and rescuers into the 20-foot deep hole and rescue the victim.
Firefighter paramedics treated the worker on scene before transporting him to an area trauma center in serious but stable condition.
The driver of the sedan that plowed into the construction site fled on foot but was quickly apprehended a block away with the help of good samaritans and law enforcement.
Video from the scene shows damage to a large generator, light stand, and excavator.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash including the role of drugs or alcohol.
