The US last week completed its first military exercise with ASEAN in the Gulf of Thailand. The drill, similar to one carried out with China last year, was made in an attempt to balance ASEAN’s engagement with both China dan the US, according to analysts.
The five day exercise acted as an opportunity for the ten countries of ASEA to parade their military presence in the disputed South China Sea.
Both the US and China has vied to curb each other’s influence region.
The move then was welcomed as a positive step towards eased tensions between the two super powers, and to qualm any anxieties and paranoia over clandestine land grabs.
The exercise was led by the US and Thailand and involved eight warships, four aircraft and more than 1,000 personnel.
