A torrential downpour of rain in eastern Spain has triggered floods and left two dead, footage from the town of Ontinyent on Wednesday shows.

Several excavators have been deployed at the site to try to remove mud and debris left by the floods. At least 50 people have had to be evacuated.

The two people lost their lives in the nearby town Caunete, 48 kilometres (30 miles) from Ontinyent.

Rain gauges have recorded an accumulated of 270 litres of water, this being the largest amount ever since they began recording in 1917.

According to local sources, the city council will request the declaration of a catastrophic zone for an episode of historical rains.
