Hi guys, I'm Emily.

I'm here with Joplin today.

And in this video we're going to talk about

how search engines work, and ensure that the site

that you build, is loved by both humans, and robots.

Before we talk about building a lovable website

let me explain in very basic detail how search engines work.

When you publish your webpage, search engines are alerted

to it's presence and send out search bots for you.

Yeah, they're basically alerted, and looking out

for the new kid on the internet block.

These bots, short for robots of course.

They scan code and content on webpages

and they take that data back to the search engines.

These bots can only gather data that's on the page.

So whether that's words or the coding

that's all the data they can really see.

Yeah, so while a picture may be worth

a thousand words to us.

To bots, not so much.

Once back at the search engine, all that data is compiled

to create a search index, or database.

When the website is indexed, a set of rules and algorithms

is applied to it in order to score and evaluate that data.

And that my friends, is the highly abridged version

of what happens when you google something.

The results page is just the search engine basically telling

you what it thinks is the best and most relevant

answer to your question.

Right, and think of the results page as real estate.

Ever heard of location, location, location?

Of course.

The same applies to the placement of a website

on a results page.

Yeah, the higher that your site is in the results

the more traffic you're going to get.

And the more quality traffic that you get

the more publicity, the more revenue, the more opportunity.

The websites that usually display at the top

of the results page, are usually paid results as well.

Yeah, that's why they have that little

ad icon next to them.

But you can actually make it onto the first page

or end up high in the results, without having to pay

if you boost your SEO, or search engine optimization.

SEO is the process of fine tuning your content or your code

to make it more search friendly.

Which in turn causes your webpage to increase

in the rankings.

Yeah, one of the primary ways to boost your SEO

is through keywords.

And keywords are the ideas and content

that help people find you.

Yeah, they describe what your site is mostly about.

Remember the bots?

Bots love keywords, and so do humans.

Most humans start their searches with keywords.

So now that you know you need keywords

how do you find them?

There's a gazillion keyword research tools out there.

Just poke around a little bit.

And some companies even offer tools that have

these things already built in.

Once you've got your keywords, you've got to put them

in the right place.

The first thing would be on the website copy

that everybody can view.

Yeah, like the words on your site.

And then you also want to add them into the HTML code.

These are things like title tags, and headings

image descriptions, things like that.

Don't go keyword crazy though.

Put some thought into how and when you use these keywords.

Both bots and humans do not appreciate keyword abuse.

SEO is a critical part of your website, so you want to be

weaving those keywords in your content and your code.

Just don't overdo it.

Once again, I'm Emily.

And I'm Joplin.

Thanks for joining us.
