Calls made to cut down on PNG's rice import For years, Papua New Guinea has been spending on rice imports to satisfy the growing consumer demand.

But a local agricultural-based NGO says PNG's rice culture can be reversed as there is mounting evidence of rice being grown and processed locally.

The Organization for Industrial, Spiritual and Cultural Advancement or OISCA based in East New Britain province says the monopoly rice market can be diversified to include smallholder farmers who can grow rice and sell to a common mill.
