A giant forged ring made of austenitic stainless steel with a diameter of 15.6 metres (51.2 feet) and a weight of 150 tonnes departed the Weifang port in Shandong Province on Saturday.

According to manager of the Information and Cultural Centre of the Shandong Heavy Industry Group Wang Ziyuan, "it was achieved for the first time," with the graded construction of a 200-tonne metal blank as well as additive manufacturing.

The forged ring broke three world records. Wang noted that the ring "has the largest diametre and the heaviest tonnage of the integral austenitic stainless steel forged into a ring in the world."

The ring was a joint project of the Shandong Heavy Industry Group, the Chinese Atomic Energy Institute and Li Yiyi of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The project reportedly kicked off in 2016.
