4th Grade Math 6.3, Fractions in Simplest Form, a.k.a. Reducing

4th Grade Math 6.3, Fractions in Simplest Form, a.k.a. Reducing We can write a fraction as an equivalent fraction in simplest form. A fraction is in simplest form when we can represent it using as few equal parts of a whole as possible. To write equivalent fractions in simplest form we can use a model, or common factors with division. Writing a fraction in its simplest form is also referred to as "reducing" the fraction. "Reduce" means to make less, or bring down. We will know a fraction is in its simplest form when the only common factor for the numerator and denominator is 1. By finding and dividing by the greatest common factor we can find the simplest form faster and do less math. By NOT using the greatest common factor, we will need to divide twice, or more. If we can't write a fraction with fewer equal parts, then the fraction cannot be simplified. All unit fractions with 1 as a numerator are in their simplest form. We use fraction bar models to compare fractions to see which is in its simplest form. We need to be careful because we may think we wrote a fraction in a simpler form, but it might not be the simplest form. We use a fraction wall to compare fractions to see which has fewer parts and is in its simplest form. We solve two word problems that involve writing fractions into their simplest form.
