Having clear instructional focuses throughout the year serves as our road-map for teaching. When we have a map to guide us, it gives us direction in our conferring with readers. Let’s reflect on our current road-map for teaching. What are the teaching focuses we are teaching across the year? Can we name them on one hand? Is there a balance of fiction and nonfiction focuses? Is there room for student choice? Are we discussing the criteria for success for each teaching focus? When we have clear instructional focuses mapped out across the year it brings clarity to our conferring and helps guide our decision making process so that our conferring is responsive to all readers.
