Somalia is at a critical road as it tries to defeat a homegrown terrorist that have wrecked havoc throughout the country. Desperate times call for desperate measures and Somalis at a crossroads of uncertainty, fear and constant pain.
The election of president farmaago on 2017 was greeted with joyous scene's throughout the world as the Somali people had witnessed a peaceful transition of power to the newly elected president. Opposition and all sectors of society had welcomed president farmaago with open arms and a willingness to work with him.
However, Farmaago has had a nightmare term so far with consistent controversies sorounding his presidency, bad mistakes and Somalis suffering the worst terrorist attack since the 9/11 world trade attacks on New York in his presidency on October 14th 2017.
The war on terror against the militant group Al shabab has stalled as the terrorists had gained foot and are on the offensive, gaining new territories and pushing the Somali military and Amisom back. Their gains have alarmed the Somali public and the international community as Al shabab have deeply infiltrated the government.
It was only a few months ago on 1st August 2019 when the then mayor of Mogadishu, Engineer Abdirahman Osman Yarisow was killed in his own office by a apparent female suicide bomber who was the Director of the Disability department of the Mayor's Banadir Office. His death was a shock to many people around the world and it had evidently proved that Al shabab had gotten stronger since farmaago's election as president of the federal government of Somalia. Deep sorrows were portrayed by all Somalis and raised many eyebrows on how Al shabab have gained strength.
President Farmaago is now in a desperate situation as time is running out in his controversial term. Trust within the public has fallen very sharply as him and his prime minister Hassan Ali Qeyre have lost major public confidence. They still have not set the roadmap for the upcoming election in 2021 but this confusion has not deterred the opposition parties, who have gained strength to strength as they seek to raise the many questions publicly that all Somalis have been asking themselves; just what is going with the war against Al shabab and Somalia?
President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed is a candidate many view as the right man to replace President Farmaago. Ex president Sharif Ahmed was the man whose term was a nightmare for the terrorist group Al shabab. It was him who had liberated Mogadishu from Al shabab in 2011 and thus pushing them back deep into the jungles of Middle Jubba. Sharif Ahmed, renowned as a man with a no nonsense attitude towards Al shabab, has many followers within the Mogadishu population, who have suffered the most of Al shabab attacks, and the wider Somali hemisphere. Many view him as the man to finally finish off Al shabab. Sheikh Sharif Ahmed is also remembered for holding peaceful national elections inside Somalia since 1969.
Sheikh Sharif Ahmed has the support of the military, who have been frustrated by president farmaago's consistent change of military general's and using the military uniform as a tool for to raise his popularity. Many insider general's within the Somali National Army view Farmaago and prime minister Qeyre as a narcissist duo with advisors that have close ties to Al shabab. "We feel that every intelligence is being handed over by people within the president's circle who are aligned with Al shabab" was a quote by one high ranking military official who had refused to be named due to fears for his life.
The consistent blunders and money spent on fake news has frustrated many Somalis and many are questioning just what is the motive of Farmaago and his prime minister Hassan Ali Qeyre?
Nevertheless, one thing is clear; Mohamed Abdullahi farmaago will not be returning as president with many hinting that to defeat Al shabab, history must be broken to reinstall Sheikh Sharif Ahmed as the next president of the Federal government of Somalia.
It remains to be seen what type of election mode the Somali government will present to the public as elections loom very fast. Many are questioning the strategy of the government as their terms comes to end, however, Somalis are keen to continue the progress of election cycle and the United vision is to not see the country fall in the hands of a few minority to kidnap the state.
Shiekh Sharif Ahmed has recently been selected to lead a united opposition and this has created for him to be a strong candidate to lead Somalia come 2021.
