Alcohol Stove Anomaly

I have experienced an anomaly while using my 5+ year old, DIY alcohol stove. It blooms,. and then goes into a super burn. The stove appears to be in good operating order. No dents or structure holes that would obviously cause this snafu. On the final burn, I removed the aluminum tray, and it handled perfectly. This elimination might have solved the anomaly, but I welcome your opinions.
