Upton injured his foot in the Angels' exhibition game before the Dodgers before Opening Day. After undergoing x-rays, it's been revealed Upton has turf toe, and he's expected to miss 8-12 weeks.
Losing Upton is a significant injury for the Angels, as the veteran slugger hit 31 home runs for Los Angeles last season, good for second on the team. With Mike Trout now in tow for years to come, the pressure for the Angels to reward the former MVP's good faith is quite high.
Without one of their most productive hitters until midseason, Brad Ausmus and Co. will need significant contributions from unlikely sources, and maybe even a career revival from Albert Pujols.
The injury occurred for Upton after he crashed into a wall.
“He was using his foot as a braking mechanism, and his toe hit the wall. We’re still gathering all of the imaging and getting it looked at by a bunch of experts. We can’t talk about a timeline, but he will start the year on the IL,” Ausmus said at the time.
With that timeline now revealed, LA will have to find a short-term solution in the outfield.
