With watch collecting, often times modern watch collectors will decide to get into vintage watches. Vintage watches can offer rare, collectible and interesting out of production pieces that many times modern can jut not offer.
Though, did you know there are some things watch collectors need to consider before jumping in?
Even with vintage Rolex, time keeping can not be always held to the same standards as modern watches. Modern watches feature new technology, parts, and pieces. The parts have not worn down on these watches, so the variance is much less. Most modern watches can be modified or worked on by a skilled watchmaker to get it into COSC or similar specs, though vintage, especially complicated vintage, including chronographs, can be difficult if not impossible, unless many parts are sometimes replaced in the watch.
WATER!!! Please stay away from water with vintage watches. Even if the watch is a dive watch. It is very rare that a 50+ year old watch will have the seals tight and in tact, unless the watch is impeccably cared for. Any damage to vintage watches can some times not be fixed if parts become rusted out or the dial is ruined. With vintage watches, dials are often not replaceable as they are out of production.
