Piriformis syndrome is when muscle spasms occur that apply pressure to the Sciatic nerve! The Sciatic nerve can send shooting pain all the way from our lower back, through our butts, and into our leg down to our calves! If we injure the piriformis muscle or overuse it, inflammation can occur along with spasms- (spasm- involuntary contraction of a muscle). This causes a build up of pressure surrounding the sciatic nerve that may cause pain!
The pain from an injury to your pirifromis muscle will mainly be felt in the butt, but it may radiate down to your back depending on the affect it has on the Sciatic nerve.
My co worker CJ (physical therapist), has been kind enough to demonstrate 3 types of stretches to help relieve piriformis pain, and prevent piriformis syndrome.
Each one of these stretches should be done 3 times for 30 second holds each side. If you just want to do one side that's fine as well, its a personal preference that stretch both sides!
