Dr. Joseph Nemeth has seen lots of patients who have had complications or problems with their tongue ring.
70% of people who get oral piercings have complications like bleeding, chipped teeth, or infection. A piercing is a hole, and the mouth is filled with bacteria making it likely to get infected if not done properly.
Tongue rings can make it difficult to swallow or speak. It can also make it difficult for a dentist to get X-rays.
The most common problem that we see is the metal that sticks out of the tongue will bang against the back of the lower front teeth. It can damage the teeth and cause bone loss around the teeth. If there is bone loss it can cause the teeth to get loose or eventually fall out.
If you do get an oral piercing:
Visit a licensed specialist who uses a disposable needle and not a piercing gun. Make sure the metal is stainless steel, gold, or platinum.
Dr Nemeth has seen many patients with tongue rings or other oral piercings suffering from issues such as loosening of the teeth, irritation of the gums, and bone loss and/or tooth loss.
Remember, keep your mouth healthy! If you have a healthy mouth you will have a healthier body.
