Norihito Ishii
Choreographer / Butoh Dancer / Artistic Director of DEVIATE.CO
Ishii was born in 1984 and raised in Tokyo.
He started his career as a street dancer at the age of 17,winning in various dance contests.
After doing as numerous back dancers, commercials / theme park dancers, etc., he widened his sphere to the stage performance in 2006.
He participated in domestic and international performances of various dance companies such as BABY-Q, Ohashi Kakuya & Dancers, Tsujimoto Tomohiko, DAIRAKUDAKAN etc. and also appeared in Yukio Ninagawa and Amon Miyamoto’s plays.
Has been performing solo and creating the performing art works since 2007, working on the state of minds of the audience with the concept of insane and universal beauty that our bodies possessed by, and asking the truth of our society.
In the Seoul International Choreography Festival 2013 he got the overall second-prize as Jury prize. After that, he reperformed in many countries including Korea, Israel and Singapore. In 2015 he achieved of the SCF Award consecutive victory at the same festival for the first time as an international dancer.
Since 2010 he has been a dancer of Sankaijuku that is well known Butoh company, performing in more than 700 cities of 45 countries, based in the Paris City Theatre where is so called a contemporary dance hall of Hame. In addition to solo performances he has been performing in over 70 cities of 23 countries totally. In 2013 he received the Japan Foundation Award.
Also he has conducted numerous contemporary dance and butoh workshops mixed with the street dance’s body structure at home and abroad, such as in Malaysia, Korea, Singapore and Bulgaria.
Between 2015 and 2017, he participated in Artist in Residence Program named Designare Movement in Korea.
Keeping pace with solo activities he has won many awards in collaboration with various artists from 2008.
In 2012 DEVIATE.CO (produce company) was launched. So far many projects have been taken place. In recent years, he invites international choreographers, for instance, from Italy, Spain, South Korea, USA, Russia, etc. for Improvement of dance scene in not only cities but districts of Japan. These many projects are provided a platform to ordinary citizens for touching dance.
