12 Project Management Key Skills of a Junior Project Manager

There are many project management key skills.

The project management skills list is huge!

Why?

Every project is unique and, therefore, project manager skills needed are different for each project.

But here's the catch:

There's a list of skills that you'll require in any company or industry.

I decompose all skills into three broad categories: hard skills, soft skills, and additional skills.

As a project manager, you need them all.

However, it doesn't mean you need to have them all right now and at once.

It would take years to master them all.

And no project management training will teach you all of these.

Some skills require practical application with real people in real scenarios.

A junior project manager may not participate in all project activities. So, for example, you may not need to apply Diplomacy too often.

Nevertheless, merely by watching your mentor at work, you can analyze his or her approach to negotiations, to the diplomacy she uses.

Project Management key skills from this training is a great starting point.

However, it's not a "full" list of skills.

You need to continuously develop your project management skills.

Also, keep in mind that at different stages of your career skills may have a different value.

So, in the beginning, your industry-specific skill (like engineering skills) will have a greater weight.

But later it loses its power.

What's more?

Your technical skill quite often gets in a way of proper project management.

They might harm the project chances for success.

So, the skills of the project manager evolve with experience. You shouldn't cling to your old skills if you want to become a great PM faster!
